New Delhi: Taking a major step towards holding municipal elections in Delhi, the central government constituted a three-member delimitation committee on Friday. Delhi election commissioner Vijay Dev will head the panel with Pankaj Kumar Singh, joint secretary, housing and urban affairs ministry, and Randhir Sahay, additional commissioner, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, as members.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by Sections 3, 3A and 5 of Delhi Municipal Corporation Act of 1957, the central government hereby constitutes a committee… to assist the central government in carrying out the delimitation of wards and other functions,” the order from the Union home ministry read.
In April, the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Act, 2022 came into force with the appointment of a commissioner and a special officer. As per the Act, MCD will have a maximum of 250 wards, down from the existing 272. The committee has been given a time of four months to carry out the tedious exercise involving the redrawing of the boundaries of municipal wards.
