What changes have you brought about in your one year as VC?
I could do a few things in the past one year and those initiatives will bear fruit in the coming years. One is CUET. Conducting one test is something, but seat allocation wasn’t easy because there were so many combinations. Yes, technology supports but creation of that technology was not easy. Fortunately, we could do it and everyone has accepted it.
The second was starting the teacher’s recruitment process. This was a very challenging and difficult task. We have started it now and interviews are going on in 10-12 colleges and the university departments. So far, we have recruited 400 people in different colleges and about 60 assistant professors in the departments. We require 220 assistant professors and about 4,000 teachers in colleges. We have requested the principals to advertise the posts.
As head of a central university, what are your suggestions for making CUET hassle-free?
This exam was held in many languages and with many combinations, and when they decided on it, they did not realise the volume. Question paper setting is a difficult task. When we are doing online exams, there is a requirement for an extensive question bank. Most probably, they didn’t have one and now they have time to prepare one.
We will also request NTA and UGC to conduct CUET twice. The UGC chairperson has said the same. If the exam takes place twice, the best performance of a student will be taken into account and it will also ease the pressure on them.
