HIMACHAL LEADS THE WAY IN HORTICULTURE PROMOTION

The state government is committed to safeguard the interests of the horticulturists by providing ample facilities for marketing and CA stores to give a boost to the economy of the state.”

Jai Ram Thakur, CM, Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh is making rapid strides to establish its identity as the horticulture hub of India. Horticulture is the mainstay of the state's agricultural economy. Today, 2.34 lakh hectares of land is under horticulture in the state. Owing to the visionary efforts of the Jai Ram Thakur Government for horticulture production and diversification, in the past four-and-a-half years, 31.40 lakh metric tonnes of fruits have been produced in the state. Besides, 74635 metric tonnes of mushrooms and 7709 metric tonnes of honey and flowers worth about Rs. 493.41 crore have been produced in the state in the past four-and-a-half years. Horticulture contributes about Rs 4000 to 4820 crore to the annual income of the state, and 9 lakh people are getting direct or indirect employment from the sector. Agriculture and allied sectors contribute about 12.73 percent of the State Gross Domestic Product SGDP), and about 40 percent of the agricultural GDP is contributed by horticulture alone. In recent years, better access to irrigation and higher demand from consumers have pushed several small farmers in Himachal to grow more fruits and vegetables. The farmers in Himachal Pradesh are today happily reaping the benefits of horticulture's success.
