New Delhi: While preparing a fresh action plan to raze the garbage mountains at Ghazipur, Bhalswa and Okhla landfills, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will have to keep in mind certain challenges that need to be addressed to achieve time-bound results.
Even if MCD makes arrangements to process approximately 280 lakh tonnes of legacy waste lying at the three landfills in the next one-two years, it doesn't have sufficient space to dump inert materials generated out of this waste. Inert constitutes 60% of the legacy waste and organisations like National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) can utilise maximum 30-35 lakh tonne in a year in road projects, said officials.
"NHAI has asked us to send inert for ongoing projects, including Urban Extension Road, Palwal-Faridabad Expressway, Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, but where will the rest go," said an official, adding that MCD is requesting Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to allow dumping at more low-lying sites. "The cost of transporting is another challenge."
