Punjab Farm Fires Surpass Last Year’s

New Delhi: The stubble burning count in Punjab has already surpassed last year’s numbers. Between September 15 and October 27 this year, Punjab recorded 8,147 paddy residue burning events as against 6,742 in 2021.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) said on Thursday that about 70% of farm fires this year were reported from just six districts — Amritsar, Firozpur, Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Patiala and Tarn Taran.

According to Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), satellites detected 1,217 crop residue burning events on Thursday. Of these, 1,111 were in Punjab, 83 in Haryana and 23 in Uttar Pradesh. Data shows the daily fire count in Punjab was over 1,000 for the past three days. However, in Haryana, farm fires reported between September 15 and October 27 were 1,578 compared with 2,103 in the same period last year.
