Over the past 24 games, the Oilers put up the second-best team save percentage in the NHL, thanks in large part to Stuart Skinner.
Mario Lemieux made the brash declaration when the 1992-93 Pittsburgh Penguins were putting the finishing touches on the longest win streak in NHL history.
“This is the best team I’ve ever played with,” said Lemieux.
It was high praise. And given how Lemieux said those words near the end of the Penguins’ record 17game streak, you’ll understand the sentiment. Never mind that Lemieux played on two Stanley Cup championship teams prior to that season, and that the 1992-93 version would ultimately fall short in the playoffs, losing in the second round. Going more than a month without losing a game can make a team feel invincible.
Which is how the Edmonton Oilers might be feeling about now if they’d won the previous two Cups. Connor McDavid’s team, if you haven’t been paying attention, is on a historic heater, putting up its 13th straight victory on Saturday night against the Calgary Flames.
For the Oilers, it’s been an amazing run for a lot of reasons. It’s the longest win streak in franchise history, long surpassing the marks of the Wayne Gretzky-powered 1980s dynasty, which never won more than eight in a row in an era that still allowed games to end in ties. The current Oilers holds the NHL record for the longest win streak by a Canadian team, breaking a mark they shared with the 1967-68 Montreal Canadiens before beating the Flames.
