Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 U.S. Open champion, was knocked out in the first round Tuesday.

Only 22-year-old Gabriel Diallo of Montreal will play another day.

Diallo opened the evening session with a four-set win over Jaume Munar: 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. The Canadian recorded 20 aces.

However, Mississauga’s Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 champion, lost an evening session heartbreaker to fifth-seeded Jasmine Paolini, a French Open and Wimbledon finalist this summer. Andreescu took the first set 7-6 (5) in 80 minutes, but Paolini bounced back 6-2, 6-4 to eliminate the Canadian in two hours, 48 minutes.
