Argo Chad Kelly was suspended for violating the CFL's gender-based violence policy.
It looks like a heavy penalty, and a half measure. After a two-month investigation, the Canadian Football League has suspended Argonauts quarterback Chad Kelly for at least half the season, or nine games. Earlier this year, Kelly was accused by a former team assistant strength and conditioning coach of unwanted advances and workplace harassment; she filed a lawsuit against Kelly and the Argos in Ontario Superior Court. Kelly and the Argonauts each filed defences. The league launched an independent investigation.
And Tuesday, the league delivered a major suspension to the league’s highest-paid player and reigning most outstanding player. In the release, CFL commissioner Randy
Ambrosie said the league’s “indepth investigation found that Mr. Kelly unequivocally violated the league’s gender-based violence policy.” The league said Kelly would have to undergo mandatory counselling and confidential assessments by a gender-based violence experts, and that if he does not make adequate progress the league could extend the suspension.
It’s a significant penalty. The CFL, to its credit, has tried to be strong on this issue. Some players have been kept out of the league due to a history of gender-based violence, and some — for instance, Saskatchewan defensive back Justin Cox in 2017 — were banned.
