The Blue Jays' pre-season began Saturday afternoon with a freshfaced 23-year-old on the mound and another one in the broadcast booth.
Young right-hander Chad Dallas worked a perfect first inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced in an eventual 14-13 loss to the Phillies, and his day was done. Things were just getting started for young left-hander Ben Shulman, though.
The new voice of the Jays, only the seventh regular radio play-by-play caller in the 48-season history of the franchise, was quietly announced near the bottom of a Sportsnet press release a couple of weeks ago. He replaces Ben Wagner, whose contract was not renewed after six roller-coaster seasons.
Wagner, who was my partner on the broadcast for his first three seasons, has landed in Baltimore, where he will work on both radio and television as part of the Orioles' crew. Hopefully he will get the support and the opportunity to flourish he never was given in Toronto.
It was only in the second of Wagner's six seasons in Toronto when he was afforded the opportunity to have a regular partner, never mind to know who his partner might be every game (when he wasn't working alone) and to travel with the team, the bare minimum of what's expected from a big-league broadcast. Unfortunately, the Jays happened to lose 95 games that year.
