York Catholic District School Board trustee and former chair Frank Alexander's motion would effectively ban the Pride flag on school property.
After rejecting a proposal last year to fly the Pride flag outside its main office, the publicly funded York Catholic school board has once again sparked outrage among students, teachers and advocates for the LGBTQ+ community with its approach to inclusivity.
The trustee at the centre of the controversy, former board chair Frank Alexander, has put forward a motion that would effectively ban the Pride flag on school property. At the same time, he is facing a human rights complaint for allegedly discriminating against and harassing a gay teacher.
In that case, the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association (OECTA) alleges Alexander shared a video containing "offensive" and "obviously untrue" statements, including that pedophiles have infiltrated the LGBTQ+ community, as well as organizations that provide sex education in schools.
Alexander and the York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB) deny the allegations. They say the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario should dismiss the complaint, because the incident did not relate to the teacher's employment and "was not in any way discriminatory towards him."
Erika Cordeiro, a Grade 12 student at St. Elizabeth Catholic High School in Thornhill, who is active in student government and the GayStraight Alliance, said the battle for inclusion is one that "we are tired of fighting."
"Honestly, we have those points where we feel like giving up," she said. "And, of course, we don't, because not only is it for us, it's for other students like us in our board."
