Toronto will host six games when the 2026 FIFA World Cup comes to town in just over two years, but that badge of honour will come with a hefty price tag.
FIFA partially fleshed out the road map for the games on Sunday, revealing Canada and Mexico will each host 13 games, with the U.S. staging the remaining 78.
The games in Canada will be split between Toronto and Vancouver.
It will be the first time Canada has hosted the FIFA Men’s World Cup. Canada hosted the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015.
The six games in Toronto will be played at BMO Field, home of Toronto FC and the Toronto Argonauts. The stadium is expected to undergo significant renovations to meet FIFA’s standards prior to kickoff.
“We’ll be ready for you in Canada,” said Toronto rapper Drake, who joined FIFA president Gianni Infantino for Sunday’s announcement in Miami.
The first match in Canada will be held on June 12, featuring the Canadian team in Toronto. The national team will then travel to Vancouver for two more games in the opening round of the quadrennial tournament.
“Toronto is excited to host six matches and the first Canadian match,” Mayor Olivia Chow said in a statement to the Star.
“Hosting these games will bring together our diverse neighbourhoods, benefit our local economy, and entertain soccer fans young and old. The games will showcase Toronto on the world stage.”
