Union extends mediation talks

Vehicles line up to cross into the U.S. at the Niagara Falls International Rainbow Bridge on Friday. Any strike action by Canadian border workers is on hold, as the union announced talks will continue until Wednesday.

A Friday strike by Canadian border workers was deferred as mediation talks continue until Wednesday.

As the 4 p.m. strike deadline approached, the union representing more than 9,000 Canadian border workers announced the extended talks, delaying the prospect of a strike that could see long lines at Canadian airports and border crossings.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) workers, who are represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), have already secured a strike mandate and are in mediation with the Treasury Board, which oversees federal government spending and serves as the primary employer for public service workers.
