We often advise our readers to spend time becoming familiar with all of the functions and features our cameras offer, highlighting the importance of this over getting the latest and greatest model. A new camera opens up possibilities, but these will go to waste if you don’t know the layout and menu structure well enough to make informed settings changes. Once you do, you can make rapid adjustments without taking your eye off the viewfinder.
After a few months of using a new camera, we probably think we know it pretty well. But even if you’ve used your camera for several years, it’s still possible to find hidden treasure among the submenus and custom functions. What tends to happen is that we use the same tools regularly without ever truly diving into all of the available custom setup options. While accessing frequently used settings becomes muscle memory, other, potentially game-changing features can remain hidden in plain sight.
We’ve lost count of how many times we’ve discovered that a camera we’ve owned for years possesses a feature we never knew about. Sometimes these might be minor and only occasionally useful things, but together they can help you work more intuitively and efficiently, and react more quickly to different shooting scenarios.
Here, we’ve rounded up some of the key tools to look out for as you explore your camera’s sub-menus – you might just find the solution to an issue that’s been nagging you among them…
