What is Anxiety?
Let's understand the actual meaning of anxiety before incorrectly interchanging it with fear in a generic context. Fear is your response to immediate danger.
Anxiety is when you worry about a possible future danger or an unknown danger. Feeling fearful about immediate danger is natural but constantly worrying about something which might or might not occur is not natural and indicates a mental health issue.
Sometimes even strong minded and balanced people may develop such symptoms when they face disturbing tragedies. But few people develop anxiety and fear even when they are dealing with normal day-to-day demands. To cope with these symptoms, people develop maladaptive behaviors like overeating, consumption of alcohol, procrastination of work, sleeping during the day or binge watching.
So, are we trying to say being anxious is a serious health issue? Not really.
Most of us worry and get anxious occasionally. Anxiety helps us plan and prepare for possible threat. But some people, constantly and consistently worry about many different aspects of life, including mundane events like did I lock the car or finishing a project on time etc. which could become excessive and unreasonable. Such people suffer from "Generalized anxiety disorder".
What is anxiety disorder as per Psychology?
In general anxiety disorder, a person excessively worries about several events or activities. He/she responds to stress with extreme tension in muscle.
Such a disorder could be triggered in a person who has experienced unpredictable or uncontrollable life events caused by a dysfunctional family. Eg: death in the family, divorced parents, chronic illness of a family member etc.
