England's disastrous campaign in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy has left fans, experts, and the England Cricket Board (ECB) questioning the future of their One-Day International (ODI) setup. The champions from the 2019 World Cup failed even to reach the semifinals, crashing out after humiliating losses to Afghanistan and Australia. What made matters worse was their inability to defend 350+ totals and their repeated collapses while chasing even moderate targets like 320.
In the aftermath, Jos Buttler stepped down from the captaincy, taking responsibility for the team's poor run. However, the problems run much deeper than just leadership. Several players have underperformed for a prolonged period, and it's clear that a revamp is required if England wants to rebuild ahead of the 2027 World Cup. Here are 5 players who should be dropped from the England ODI team immediately:
1) LIAM LIVINGSTONE – THE ALL-ROUNDER WHO DOES NEITHER
Liam Livingstone’s inclusion in the England ODI team was initially seen as a masterstroke. A powerful striker of the ball and a useful spinner, Livingstone was expected to provide balance at No.6 while also chipping in with crucial overs in the middle phase of the innings. Unfortunately, his performances have consistently fallen short of expectations.
Livingstone’s Recent Form
Livingstone endured a forgettable tour of India in the lead-up to the Champions Trophy, during which he played all 7 white-ball games (3 ODIs & 4 T20Is) without registering a single match-winning contribution. His bowling was inconsistent, his batting lacked maturity, and his shot selection often frustrated fans. In the Champions Trophy, Livingstone once again failed to leave his mark, both with the bat and the ball.
