Originating in Scotland in the 15th century, golf has evolved into a globally beloved pastime, celebrated for its unique challenges and the camaraderie it fosters among players. Whether enjoyed as a leisurely pursuit or as a competitive endeavour, golf offers a dynamic and rewarding experience, inviting players of all ages and skill levels to engage in its timeless allure. Golf is often perceived as a sport of the elite, one that is beyond the reach of the common man, rather than one that must transcend socioeconomic barriers to ensure that it survives and thrives.
This article, my fellow golf patrons, can be taken as a request, suggestion or a guide on how to promote and develop the game. It is a blueprint that spans from an individual level to a collaborative effort amongst the State Golf Associations (SGAS) and the Indian Golf Union (IGU). This blueprint when actioned can make India the golf hub of Asia and eventually, in the world.
As the appeal of the game increases, we are seeing new golf courses mushrooming across the country. However, we still have a long way to go before the game reaches the popularity of other sports in India. It is, therefore, incumbent upon the State Golf Associations to combat the multiple barriers that are currently preventing the expansion at the grassroots level.
BARRIERS TO THE GAME
Several barriers prevent golf from being widely adopted at the grassroots level. From expensive equipment, club memberships and unseen fees to lack of access to golf courses, problems with infrastructure and no widely available sports facilities, gyms, training areas and coaches. Smaller suburban or economically disadvantaged areas with a demography of lower-income communities are not aware of the kind of opportunities that the sport offers when associated with it.
