Now that another Flat season has been wrapped up and the clocks have retreated, jumping fans can now brave the winter squalls action and rejoice at the awaiting Luckily I'm one of those who enjoy both codes, and yes, even All-Weather racing. I've spent enough chilly Monday nights at Wolverhampton, desperate to crack the mysteries of low-grade Class 6 handicaps; they form the ultimate puzzle, making cryptic crosswords look child's play.
You will be relieved to read that I will save further All-Weather talk for the darker days when the turf is bone hard. At this time of year I don my investigative hat and endeavour to gather some valuable ammunition for the winter jumps season.
I have been on my autumn prowl sounding out some horses to follow for the months ahead. Not trumpet blowing, but of the 11 horses I dug up last November, only two failed to win and one of them IN THE AIR, with Gary and Josh Moore at the time of selection, has since won twice for Nicky Henderson. The odd one out was Kim Bailey's PHANTOM GETAWAY who failed to make any impact in novice chases, but I think he's had a problem or two. Wind surgery last autumn didn't appear to have a beneficial effect, however when I texted the trainer for one to follow this time around, he nominated the same horse, so maybe he's turned the corner. Phantom Getaway's hurdle form was most respectable and he may not be one to place on the reject pile just yet.
