STARTED BY STUDENTS
In 1891 the students from two local schools banded together to create Brugsche Football Club in the Belgian town of Bruges, using the motto 'a healthy mind in a healthy body'. When what has now become the Belgian football association was formed in 1895, Brugsche FC was a founding member and took part in the first ever league campaign in 1895/96. Financial difficulties and splits saw the team enter early difficulties, but they re-formed under the French name Football Club Brugeois. It was not until 1972 that they took the Dutch name Club Brugge.
