A long time ago, on a console far, far away (probably in the attic?), the LEGO Star Wars saga was unleashed. Despite having a bad feeling about it due to the child-friendly visuals, the comedic leanings of the cut scenes and the general sense of this being a 'kid's game', it proved to be absolutely fantastic. It reached across age demographics by delivering an experience that was accessible enough for younger players but challenging enough for the more mature gamer. Plus the seemingly endless self-referential nods to the fan base were whoop-inducingly brilliant. All bases were covered.
This was not only the Star Wars prequels in Lego form, but unlike their big-screen counterparts, it was fun and a pleasure to immerse yourself in. The games-buying public agreed, and the Traveler's Tales/LEGO gaming franchise became a monster, pulling in such marquee names as Pirates of the Caribbean, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, Batman, Marvel, DC and Lord of the Rings. Yet was The Force as strong with this series as one would expect?
Brick by Brick
With this rerelease for iOS, we're back to the franchise that launched a thousand polygon bricks; LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga. Sadly, from even the briefest of plays, it's very clear the bottom of the barrel is being scraped deeper than a proton torpedo in a thermal exhaust port.
LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga (although it clearly isn't complete as it misses the recent trilogy) couples the 2005 prequels with 2006's original trilogy. Both titles are remastered for the iOS platforms, yet while both incarnations of the games are superior to their predecessors in every way, somehow as a whole this package is less impressive than a duo of games almost as long in the tooth as our editor.
