Headquartered in Santa Barbara, CA, Echo Test + Measurement is a little company with a big impact on audio test and measurement for consumer electronics. Based on its sound card technology, it created a full modular test interface range, which Stuart Yaniger had the opportunity to evaluate.
Audio test and measurement has generally been clearly divided between home and professional users. Professional gear from the likes of Audio Precision or Rohde & Schwarz is rugged, reliable, high performance, and generally easy to set up. The bench instruments are particularly capable of quickly changing over measurements from one type to another and are notable for their versatility, since they may be used for a variety of measurement types and goals, from development to research to product validation.
Production instruments are generally less flexible, but easy to program to allow production staff to perform repetitive tasks such as quality control checks rapidly, consistently, and without having to delve into the engineering. All of this comes at a price, of course, but traceability and the ability to automate are vital for manufacturing.
