The world's first square watch was made as a one-off and gifted by Louis Cartier to his Brazilian aviator pal Alberto Santos-Dumont in 1904. Timepieces had always previously been round, largely down to the shape of the movement's cogs and wheels, and the ability to screw the case tight shut as some form of waterproofing.
