ANIL SUTRADHAR-THE BROKEN MASK
Travellers' World|February - March 2023
The drowsy afternoon light caught the filaments of his grey hair; his droopy eyes lit up for a while looking at us. The pack of cards, dust-laden and bundled with a wornout rubber band, was his sole companion. A cluster of masks, yet to be drawn, sat in cold anticipation. I entered the front room and before me was the Chhau dancer and mask artist of yesteryear Anil Sutradhar who was once lauded far and wide but is now a footnote to the chapter of 'cultural apathy'!
Sudeep Ghosh
ANIL SUTRADHAR-THE BROKEN MASK

He was the most applauded Chhou dancer based in Charida, a village in the Baghmundi Community Block in the Jhalda subdivision of the Purulia district in West Bengal. He, who is on the threshold of his 96th year this March, is the last gasp of a cultural tradition he had nurtured since the age of eight as a child prodigy.

A contemporary of the Padma Sri Gambhir Singh Mura, the exponent of the Purulia school of Chhau, Anil Sutradhar is the founder of the 'Manbhum Mukhosh Ghar' (Manbhum Mask House). His contribution to teaching, nourishing and spreading the legacy of Chhou dance has few equals. As the Manager of Gambhir Singh's team, he spearheaded a cultural movement that animated the language of performing art. As a script writer with a natural gift for improvisation, the dance performance of Chhou was at its peak as the masks created by him would not only remain a vibrant exercise in performing rhetoric but also added a unique range to the act of storytelling in its interweaving of mythical folklores with variegated images from the classics. He also infused modern sensibilities in his organic composition of Chhou dance. Unfortunately, these compositions and experiences are not documented for posterity to dawn upon and gain insights.

National Parks Of India

India is blessed with a rich tapestry of biodiversity that is both a natural heritage and a national treasure. The concept of national parks in the country traces back to the late 19th century when the importance of conserving wildlife began to take root in the consciousness of the colonial administration. The first national park in India, Hailey National Park (now known as Rajaji National Park), was established in 1936, marking a historic commitment to wildlife conservation. The post-independence era saw an exponential increase in protected areas, primarily driven by a need to conserve India’s unique flora and fauna threatened by rampant industrialization and urbanization.
