LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY IN LADAKH

Renowned photographer Kalpana Chatterjee has been traveling to different parts of the world for decades. Yet, her association, works and memories of the Ladakh region have always been closest to her heart. Kalpana shares some valuable tips for the people behind the lens with special reference to landscape photography in Ladakh. So, next time you are packing your bag for an adventure of a lifetime in Ladakh, don't forget to have a look at the following valuable guides:

1. Ladakh is about mountains, their shape, form and size. In order to create a picture worth a thousand words you may have to move a mountain” but when it comes to photography it is imperative to move rather than move the mountain to get better angles. Observe the light, learn the light and make photos that speak the language of Light. Understanding the Light quality, light direction and light temperature are key aspects of stunning landscapes.

2. Differentiate between a photograph and a snapshot. Ladakh has been all about photographing light and texture. Front lighting a mountain will only yield a photo without any details, a tourist snapshot”. Avoid it.

3. Gather information prior to setting out on a shoot. At sunrise and sunset, you get colored light. The mountain peaks generally light up first, turning pink at dawn, to red, to orange, and then yellow as the sun rises higher in the sky. Plan to be there at the right time.

4. Re-visit the places at different times of the day as First light always paints the same canvas differently.

5. Side Lighting has been my personal favorite. The warmth in the scene against the deep blue sky has always piqued my interest.

6. Layering matters most. Create a sense of Depth. Showcase the expanse. A far-off view never fails.

7. Nailing the exposure should be your aim. But being paranoid about it kills the essence of accomplishment in photography.

National Parks Of India

India is blessed with a rich tapestry of biodiversity that is both a natural heritage and a national treasure. The concept of national parks in the country traces back to the late 19th century when the importance of conserving wildlife began to take root in the consciousness of the colonial administration. The first national park in India, Hailey National Park (now known as Rajaji National Park), was established in 1936, marking a historic commitment to wildlife conservation. The post-independence era saw an exponential increase in protected areas, primarily driven by a need to conserve India’s unique flora and fauna threatened by rampant industrialization and urbanization.
