Choose the right tree
When selecting an apple tree, consider the climate in your area, the amount of space in your backyard and what kind of apples you would like to grow. Some apples are sweet, while others are tart or tangy. Some are crisp and crunchy, while others are softer and juicier. Choose a variety that suits your taste preferences and intended use (e.g. baking, snacking or cider-making). Popular varieties include Granny Smith (large, crisp, green fruit), Gala (red, sweet fruit) and Adore (juicy and keeps well).
AN EGG-CELLENT IDEA!
Eggshells are great for fruit-bearing trees as they are high in minerals that help plants grow, including calcium carbonate, potassium and magnesium. To make eggshell fertiliser, wash the eggshells and leave to dry. Crush into a fine powder using a mortar and pestle or a rolling pin, then scatter over the soil.
