HE was married once," Sue said, lowering her voice as if Robbie, hard at work in her H bedroom, might overhear.
"Was he really."
It wasn't a question and Cathy didn't seem
surprised, but Cathy was an experienced nurse and rarely gave anything away.
"I expect you assumed he wasn't the marrying kind," Sue went on. "But he was.
"He worked hard building up his business, doing courses and gaining a good reputation, but it wasn't good enough for her."
"I can't imagine anyone feeling that Robbie wasn't good enough," Cathy replied. "When he did that work at the health centre, he was always so cheerful.
"He's the hardest-working man I've ever met, and possibly the kindest, but these things happen, as I know from experience."
"Oh, I'm so sorry. I didn't think." Sue was aghast.
What fool would give up a beautiful young woman like Cathy?
"Don't worry about it. I married too young, that's all."
"It doesn't mean you're a hopeless case any more than Robbie is," Sue insisted. "Don't give up hope. You're only thirty."
Cathy laughed and closed her bag.
"I could say the same to you, Sue. Seventy is the new sixty," she replied. "I'll be back tomorrow.
"We might be able to leave the dressing off soon.
Your leg has healed well and there's no sign of infection."
"That's good news." Sue smiled. "I'll be jogging through the park before you know it."
"Good thing, too," Cathy replied. "It'll do you good to get out and see other people. Do you have many visitors?"
"Some," Sue admitted.
Cathy headed for the door and called up the stairs.
"I'm off now, Robbie. See you later."
"Bye, Cathy! Take care." Robbie was in Sue's bedroom installing built-in wardrobes.
He was a talented carpenter and didn't charge the earth for his considerable skill.
