Salisbury was once described as the loveliest town in England’. It’s actually a city, but there’s no denying its relaxed, small-town feel. Stroll around the Cathedral Close and if you pretend the cars are 18th-century carriages you can just about imagine yourself in a Jane Austen novel. Or you can walk along the River Avon and enjoy views of the cathedral that inspired the artist John Constable, who painted some of his best-known works here.
TAKE 332 STEPS TO HEAVEN
Salisbury Cathedral famously boasts the tallest spire in England, at 404ft, and also houses one of the best copies of the famous Magna Carta. But perhaps the highlight of any visit is a tower tour. To get to the top you have to climb 332 steps in easy stages) and walk through narrow stone passages. Once you reach the top, at the base of the spire, you are rewarded with spectacular views of the city. Adults £16; children £9.

Lying in the hospital bed, my husband Michael had tears of happiness in his eyes as he showed me a photo on his phone. 'Here she is,' he said proudly.
