Travel anywhere in the world and most people will have heard of Liverpool. Its music and football make it one of the best-known places on the planet - but many Brits have never ventured to this iconic city right on their doorstep. Liverpool has changed quite a bit since its Sixties heyday.
Massive regeneration projects sparked by its 2008 stint as European Capital of Culture were followed by a boom in foodie venues, cool bars and cutting-edge galleries and museums. And it's not all about the city centre. Just minutes up the coast you'll find iconic art, awardwinning beaches - and some very special woodland creatures.
TOP SIGHTS
Liverpool is a compact city, making it easy to get around on foot - just as well considering it has seven museums (including those focused on slavery and maritime history) - two cathedrals and some of the best shopping in north west England.
To get the most spectacular view of its famous waterfront, hop on a ferry across the Mersey. Fifty-minute tours start at the Gerry Marsden Terminal at Pier Head (merseyferries.co.uk) and take in the majestic Three Graces the Liver Building (with its famous birds), the Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building.
