Steady, I think as I hobble between seaweed-coated rocks with a camera in hand, inching clumsily towards my targets: a pair of pelicans craning their necks at the water’s edge. The waves are nipping at my heels, threatening to topple me from my precarious perch with each step.
Just as I get close enough for my shot, I catch an unexpected movement out of the corner of my eye. Looking up just in time, I spot a Southern Right whale making a jaw-dropping breach in the distance before splashing back into the sea.
This is a once in a lifetime experience anywhere else but here on Kangaroo Island, just off the coast of South Australia, wildlife is so abundant that it feels like you’re on a 24/7 safari.
Indeed, in the four days I’ve been road-tripping around the island, I’ve spotted koalas chomping on eucalyptus leaves, echidnas (mammal resembling a hedgehog) rooting for ants, and more kangaroos and wallabies hopping around than I could ever have imagined. Not to mention the baby seals frolicking in the surf, or the dozens of species of birds fluttering in the forest canopy.
