The wrong diet
Not eating the right nutrients can leave you sluggish, as well as prone to infections and illness.
✣ Eat wholegrains They’ll help balance your blood sugars and avoid energy slumps. Try wholemeal bread and brown rice. ‘Complex carbs, such as sweet potatoes and oats, give a hit of lasting energy too,’ says nutritionist Angelique Panagos.
✣ Ditch the sugary treats ‘They provide a quick energy boost – but they’ll quickly lead to a slump, leaving you feeling very listless,’ says nutritionist Jenna Hope. Try apple slices with peanut butter or carrot sticks with houmous.
✣ Try a little red meat It’s the best source of iron, which we need to make red blood cells to transport oxygen around our bodies. ‘Low iron can cause extreme tiredness and fatigue,’ says nutritionist Rob Hobson. Good non-meat sources include dark green veg (spinach and kale), pulses and legumes (beans and peas), and nuts and seeds.
GET TESTED
Worried you might be anaemic? Ask your GP for a blood test to check your iron levels. Your doctor can prescribe iron tablets to help.
Not drinking smart
Too much alcohol or caffeine, and not enough water, can play havoc with your energy levels.
