Vivacious teenager Sarah Spiers had just enjoyed an evening with friends in the affluent Perth suburb of Claremont. The young receptionist had partied until 2am, then walked to a telephone box and booked a taxi to take her home to Mosman Park, five minutes away.
But by the time the cab arrived, about seven minutes later, Sarah, 18, had vanished, never to be seen again.
Several Mosman Park residents reported hearing piercing screams where she would have been dropped off, then a car driving away. What happened to Sarah 27 years ago, on Australia Day, 1996, remains a mystery.
SARAH SPIERS Her body has never been found.
Sarah's parents Don and Carol never gave up on justice for Sarah.
Retired homicide detective Paul Ferguson, who was in charge of the taskforce when Sarah went missing, is convinced he knows who killed her - Bradley Robert Edwards.
"I'm positive he killed Sarah," he tells Woman's Day. "But knowing it and proving it are two different things. Sarah's body needs to be found, and also what's needed is an admission from Edwards."
Within months of Sarah's disappearance, two more young women would vanish from the streets of Claremont after nights out with friends. Childcare worker Jane Rimmer, 23, was last seen outside a bar on June 9, 1996. Eight weeks later, her body was found in bushland by a family picking flowers.
