And that was before we heard this: All four traditional components of pumpkin spice-cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and clove-"have properties that improve overall health and do things like increase feelings of fullness, boost metabolism and burn fat," reveals Spice Up, Slim Down author Melina Jampolis, M.D. The effect is surprisingly powerful. Readers asked to add more cozy spices to fall meals shed up to a pound a day without dieting. And people who were encouraged to spice up keto guidelines melted up to 14 pounds in a single week!
What kind of impact will pumpkin spice have for you? To find out, try sneaking it into things you already eat and drink, like smoothies, oatmeal and stir-fries. You don't even have to worry about eating healthier if you don't want to. "I started with one teaspoon of spice in my coffee every morning," shares former yo-yo dieter Nagina Abdullah, who read about the idea on the internet. "At the time, I felt too crummy to handle anything else. I swear I could feel a difference in my metabolism right away. And it cut my hunger and cravings, so I began eating better with no stress."
Continuing to add spice and take small steps, Nagina soon shed 40 pounds, and is now a weight-loss coach who has helped other women lose thousands of pounds. "Spices really work!" she says. University of Colorado spice researcher John C. Peters, Ph.D., agrees. He suggests aiming for at least two daily teaspoons of pumpkin spice (or any herbs/spices you enjoy). "There is no downside," he says, "and no limit on how much you can add or how much you can benefit."
