What's this career about?
Websites are the channel through which businesses connect with their prospects and customers. Web designers use their creative and technical skills to design new websites and redesign existing ones. They are typically focused on what is called the “front-end” of the website, the part of the website users actually see and interact with.
They are often responsible for choosing everything from the photos and imagery, the fonts, shape language, colour scheme, buttons, as well as how all of these elements fit together. They use design software such as Photoshop to create mockups or image-based representations of how the final website should look once code is applied.
Designers work closely with creative directors, project managers, strategists and other design team members to develop specifications and make adjustments regarding the use of new and emerging web technologies.
After a few years of experience, designers identify their strengths and often concentrate on specialized areas such as graphics, user interface design, interactive design, front-end development
Multimedia and web design is of 3 years’ duration.
The National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, is one of the most prestigious institutes in India imparting education and training to the students in the field of web designing. It offers B.Des. (Design), a 4 years’ course. Admission is through an entrance examination.
A post-graduate qualification is not necessary to get into the job but it can be helpful, particularly for jobs with a high level of competition or if the qualification provides you with a particular specialization.
