<p>In January 1926, Yachting featured renowned yachtsman Charles F. Chapman. Since 1917, his book Chapman Piloting &amp; Seamanship has been a must-read for mariners, with 3 million copies sold to date. The first edition included 144 pages of must-know information. Now in its 69th edition, the tome is a whopping 920 pages.&nbsp;According to a New York Times article at the time of his death in 1976, Chapman was originally commissioned to write the book in 1916 by then Assistant Secretary of the Navy Franklin Delano Roosevelt as a manual for the Navy Reserves. It is said that the first edition-originally called Piloting, Seamanship and Small Boat Handling was completed in only three days and was based largely on articles Chapman had written as the editor of Motor Boating magazine. In addition to his writing prowess and nautical expertise, Chapman helped found the United States Power Squadrons in 1914 and was a speedboat- and endurance racing enthusiast, serving as a navigator for the legendary Gar Wood, among others.
