Seldom are business houses able to endure changing fortunes and the vagaries of time to script a 123-year-old legacy, as has the SVP Group. Founded by Seth Shri Vallabh Pittie in 1898, the group has traversed diverse businesses and multiple generations to pass on the baton to Vinod Pittie, the man currently at the helm of affairs, whom we have featured on our cover this issue. A leading manufacturer and exporter of cotton yarn and textiles, the group is on its way to fulfilling its vision of becoming a world leader in the manufacture of yarns, fabrics and garments.

With sustainable practices gaining momentum in view of the adverse effects of climate change, the solar energy solutions sector has seen a growth spurt in recent years. Among those to register high growth is Kolkata-based Vikram Solar which has emerged a leader in high efficiency photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturing and as provider of comprehensive engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) solutions. We bring you a Q&A with Gyanesh Chaudhary, the managing director of Vikram Solar, under whose leadership all this growth has been accomplished.

The Jaipur-based KGK Group counts among the biggest jewellery houses in the country, commanding a global presence with offices and operations spread across the world. A privately held conglomerate with multiple business verticals that include gemstone mining, diamond processing, jewellery manufacturing, jewellery retailing and distribution, much of the group’s growth is credited to vice chairman Sanjay Kothari, whom we have featured in this issue.

Marwaris may no doubt be synonymous with enterprise and wealth creation, but they are almost as well known for philanthropy. Doing one’s mite for the less privileged is in fact ingrained in the Marwari ethos. There are those, however, whose dedication to philanthropy takes on a larger dimension, as is the case with Kashi Murarka and son Dr Aneel Murarka, the owners of Mirachem Industriies, whom we have featured on our cover this issue. The Murarkas’ contributions in the domains of charity and philanthropy have in fact earned them more prominence than their credentials as a flourishing Mumbai-based chemical manufacturer.

Sharing a part of one’s wealth may come easy for the wealthy, but there are those selfless individuals too in the Marwari community for whom philanthropy is a career choice and an unflinching dedication. Padma Shri Kailash Chandra Agarwal ‘Manav’, the founder-chairman of Udaipur’s Narayan Seva Sansthan, is one such individual. What started with a desire to provide free meals to harried attendants of poor patients in government hospitals has grown into a mammoth institution today which serves the underprivileged and the differently-abled, especially poor children, through its 480 branches across India.

Time brings change and outlooks and preferences change with each passing generation. Even for Marwaris, a community known for its rigid adherence to tradition, this holds true, as has been exemplified by Neetish Sarda of Smartworks and father Ghanshyam Sarda of Sarda Group of Companies, whom we have featured on our cover this issue. While Ghanshyam Sarda—an eminent jute baron from Kolkata—illuminates the Marwari business horizon as a stalwart of the industrialist era, son Neetish Sarda, the head honcho of Smartworks, a leading name in the business of co-working spaces, symbolises the modern generation’s penchant for new-age businesses. 

Vaibhav Khandelwal, the co-founder of Shadowfax Technologies, likewise stands out as yet another example of the changing face of Marwari enterprise. An integrated third-party logistics services provider based out of Bengaluru, Shadowfax leverages technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning to offer efficient, cost-effective and agile end-to-end logistics solutions in this era of online shopping, which is rewriting the rules of the retail business. 

Kartik Gaggar of Rajasthan Studio, yet another new age Marwari, has successfully integrated his Shekhawati lineage, his love for culture and the power of information technology by creating a business that promotes the diverse arts and crafts of Rajasthan, both online and offline. Rajasthan Studio also endeavours to create and support a pan-India community of artists and build an ecosystem to empower young, budding and talented artists. 

Together with Kartik Gaggar, in a special art section, we have featured three national award-winning artists and craftsmen from Rajasthan—Ram Swaroop Sharma, Prithvi Raj Kumawat and Dr Jyoti Swaroop Sharma.

Marwari women have come a long way from times when their role was restricted to just homemaking. Today, as more and more of them prove their worth in other fields, some have chosen to walk alongside their male counterparts to take their family ventures to greater heights. We have featured two such dynamic ladies on our cover this issue: Madhu Neotia of Ambuja Neotia Group and Divya Jain of Safexpress. While Madhu Neotia’s contributions to the group’s healthcare and hospitality businesses and other initiatives intended at giving back to society deserve much commendation, Divya Jain has exemplified the tremendous potential of Marwari women through her roles of augmenting the family business and now spearheading the Safeducate initiative, which is involved in skilling youth and helping them to carve a better future.

The Covid-19 pandemic no doubt has been a huge eye-opener for the tremendous potential of the online space, but there are those whose vision and farsightedness led them to harness its power to build successful enterprises years ago. Among them is Pulkit Jain, co-founder of Vedantu, whom we have featured on our cover this issue. A tech-enabled and hugely successful platform for online coaching, Vedantu boasts over 1,000 tutors, who teach millions of paid students in addition to offering free classes, in a real-time, virtual learning environment.

Dr Kriti Bharti’s story is no less impressive, who as founder and managing trustee of Jodhpur-based Saarthi Trust has taken the lead in annulling child marriages and has rehabilitated thousands of women and children in Rajasthan. But few perhaps match pioneering industrialist Govidram Seksaria’s generosity and lifelong commitment to philanthropy. Talking about preservation of culture, we also bring you the story of The Bengal Rowing Club in Kolkata—or The Marwari Rowing club, as it was once known—which has completed 90 years of existence this year. Co-founded by Sir Badridas Goenka, Brij Mohan Birla and a few other illustrious Marwaris in 1929, the club today stands as a proud icon of Marwari heritage that offers a plethora of sports, entertainment and cuisine to around 3,200 members. 

Geeta Khandelwal’s efforts to promote and sell quilts made by India’s ethnic communities and artists has not only brought her global fame, but also culminated in the publication of her book titled 'Godharis of Maharashtra, Western India'. Read about the tireless entrepreneur, author and textile artist, whose latest passion is making miniature versions of costumes worn by the maharajas of India from 1850 to 1950.
  
Coming back to the fabled entrepreneurial acumen of Marwaris, we have featured siblings Sharad Kumar Saraf and his brother Sudarshan Saraf of Technocraft Industries (India) Limited, who have come a long way from the early seventies, when they set up their drum closure manufacturing unit in Mumbai.
