A retreat to the wilderness with creature comforts to spare was the client’s requirement in the making of a holiday bungalow for his extended family. Thus, Archt Nandika Samaranayake endeavoured a design centred around an open verandah with a touch of sophistication, situated at the border of the Yala wildlife reserve.
Within the vicinity of Atthidiya marsh at Boralasgamuwa, the house stands out in unique rustic colours, yet spells out simplicity. The triple storey brick house with peculiar elegance was designed on merely six perches. A multipurpose nest, the house is not the Architect’s permanent residence, but has the functional possibility of being used as a home and an office space when required.
Royal Fernwood porcelain showroom on Havelock Road grabs the attention of the passerby. The showroom airs its wares well as the container provides an unobtrusive backdrop to the porcelainware on display.
A lone carriage painted in blue attached to a long line of red hued train carriages signaled the latest addition to Sri Lanka’s railway system. A pioneering venture of Expo Rail and created by KWA Architects, the brightly coloured carriage signified the dawn of a new era of luxury train services in Sri Lanka.
Early childhood interactions with building sites and architects shaped Architect Michele Fonseka’s future.

The Architect Magazine Description:

The quarterly publication is the journal of the Institute of Architects, Sri Lanka. Done in collaboration with the Institute the magazine carries a theme with each issue and features projects and houses of local architects. Each covers interesting aspects in design, innovation and issues relevant to the present day to kindle the interest of both the general reader and architects alike. The magazine also features student projects, profile articles, features and latest news both local and international in the sphere of architecture.
