Development activities connected with public spaces such as the Galle Face Green, Independence Square, Vihara Maha Devi Park, Race Course, Clock Tower in Fort are anticipated in the near future for improving public participation and uplifting the tourism industry. The Dutch Hospital shopping precinct is one such example. The Ministry of Defence and the UDA initiated the current development of the building which dates back to the early Dutch era.
Architecture is a broad subject encompassing different elements. These elements could range from building a new structure to renovating an already existing one to give it a new life. The Crown Spa and Salon project undertaken by the PWA Interiors is an example of the latter as it has been salvaged from its dilapidated state to glow with a new found life.
The idea of a tent for many would conjure up images of nomadic wanderings, or grittily braving the elements. Dolphin Beach in Kalpitiya, is a tented resort, which aims to dispel this common notion and prove that closeness to nature and opulent comfort need not be poles apart.
The SLIA organised a design competition for the Jaffna Cultural Centre (JCC), at the request of the Indian High Commission to hold a national design competition for the development of conceptual designs for the project in order to select a suitable consultant architect for the project.
What makes Archigram so unique is that the Archigram group was able to capture the attention of not only the architects but reach out and create a change in mass culture through only the publication of their magazine “The Architectural + Telegram” = Archigram.
Tucked away amidst tall leafy foliage and a paddy field in the picturesque village of Aranwela, Tangalle this 100 year old ‘walawwa’ presented a charming setting as well as a challenge for Archt Pradeep Kodikara to combine the old world charm with contemporary architecture.

The Architect Magazine Description:

The quarterly publication is the journal of the Institute of Architects, Sri Lanka. Done in collaboration with the Institute the magazine carries a theme with each issue and features projects and houses of local architects. Each covers interesting aspects in design, innovation and issues relevant to the present day to kindle the interest of both the general reader and architects alike. The magazine also features student projects, profile articles, features and latest news both local and international in the sphere of architecture.
