In this issue, the latest version of Nissan’s large and powerful Patrol has landed in South Africa. We travelled to Australia ahead of the vehicle’s local launch to find out just how impressive this 4x4 is.

KNOWING THE KALAHARI: There is something about the Kalahari that is difficult to explain: why do people who fall in love with this barren land seem to become obsessed with it? Why, against all odds, does this semi-desert, grab you and not let you go?
TO HELL AND BACK: For Kingsley and crew, their Riding High on Sky journey to Die Hel from the top of the Swartberg Pass certainly didn’t disappoint; the steep twists and turns of the five mountain passes that take you down to one of the most remote valleys in South Africa make it a must for any adventurer.

TWENTY YEARS OF ALU-CAB: Over the past 20 years, Voetspore has evolved along with the 4×4 and overlanding industry.
JUST PASSING THROUGH:  Kingsley Holgate and crew developed a new-found appreciation for the 19th-century master road engineer extraordinaire Thomas Bain on their recent adventure. 
DARING DESERT RACER: Many might not have heard the name Taye Perry before this year’s Dakar Rally. For those following the event, though, it was the name on everyone lips... and for all the right reasons.


PARADISE REGAINED ON THE WILD COAST: One of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the world is on our doorstep. Transkei’s Wild Coast has rightfully gained legendary status for its beauty, dramatic scenery and friendly people.
RIDING HIGH ON SKY: For Kingsley and crew, there was no better place to kick off the year and a bright new decade than from Lesotho’s 3 262m Tlaeeng summit, said to be the highest drivable pass in southern Africa.

BRINGING THE ‘GIRLS’ BACK: For Kingsley and crew, the expedition is not complete until the Landies are home. CONFESSIONS OF A TANK GIRL: Meet the first lady of motorcycles, the saviour of endangered animals and all-round nice person, Skinny van Schalkwyk. She may not be a household name but those who have followed her exploits know she knows how to have a good time on a motorcycle.

LOCAL IS LEKKER: On the recent Voetspore in South Africa journey, apart from the three Land Cruisers for the team and a Hilux for the editing team, we also had a RAV4 for guests and journalists who joined us from time to time on the 12 500 journey around South Africa. BRIDGING THE GAP: We’re on a crazy East to West journey that started at the Mouth of the Zambezi River on the Mozambican coast and it’s taken us across the African continent to the Republic of the Congo. Our destination is the mouth of the mighty Congo River where it gushes out into the Atlantic Ocean.

CHALLENGES IN THE CONGO: The road from Lubumbashi to Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has the reputation of being one of the most challenging 4×4 roads in the world. It’s bigger, smarter, more luxurious, safer, theoretically better off-road and in many ways, more comfortable. But it only gets a two-litre petrol boxer engine, coupled to Subaru’s continuously variable transmission. We took the all-new Forester on a 3 500km road trip.
