Naira's Mixed Signals: Dollar Strengthens as Interest Rate Cut Expectations Rise"

However, the domestic currency lost the N1,600/$ support line in the black market, trading at N1,610/$1 late Wednesday, compared to N1,605/$1 on Tuesday. Market indicators confirm that despite improved macroeconomic conditions in the Nigerian FX market, the local currency is struggling to maintain the crucial N1,500 support level and is under significant strain this month.

Fundamentals suggest that the local currency may move towards N1,800/$1 if it cannot sustain its current levels. At this point, even staunch proponents of free market economics will be skeptical that the naira will reach its March highs this quarter

The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) has issued a $500 million domestic dollar bond, which opened for subscription on August 19, 2024. The bond has a 9.75% per annum interest rate and will mature in 2029. The auction will remain open until August 30, 2024, allowing investors to participate in this offering.
The bond is structured as a five-year investment with semi-annual coupon payments. Investors can purchase units at a minimum of $1,000 each, with an initial minimum subscription set at $10,000 (10 units). The redemption of the bond will occur through a bullet repayment at the end of the five-year term.
This bond issuance is part of Nigeria's financial strategy, providing an opportunity for investors both within and outside the country. The bond is open to a wide range of investors, including Nigerian residents, individuals with savings abroad, members of the Nigerian diaspora, and Qualified Institutional Investors.
The bond qualifies as a security under several legal frameworks, including the Trustee Investment Act and the Pension Reform Act, allowing trustees and Pension Fund Administrators to invest in it. Additionally, it qualifies as a government security under the Company Income Tax Act (CITA) and the Personal Income Tax Act (PITA), offering tax exemption benefits for pension funds.

Nigeria's four national refineries, even at full capacity, can only produce about 20 million liters of petrol daily, which is only enough to meet 50% of the country's daily demand, according to energy expert Daniel Kunle. This means that the country's refineries are not capable of making Nigeria energy sufficient, even when they are all working.

Kunle, a former technical adviser to the Minister of Petroleum Resources, made this statement during an interview on Channels Television's "Politics Today". He noted that the four government refineries, located in Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna, have a combined production capacity of 20 million liters of petrol per day, which is less than half of the country's daily demand of 40 million liters.

"This is a serious challenge for Nigeria, as it means that we are not able to produce enough petrol to meet our own needs, let alone export any surplus," Kunle said. "We are forced to rely on imported petrol, which is expensive and can be unpredictable in terms of supply."

Kunle praised the Dangote refinery, which is currently under construction, as a significant achievement that will help to address Nigeria's energy needs. "The Dangote refinery is a game-changer for Nigeria," he said. "It has the capacity to produce 50 million liters of petrol per day, which is more than enough to meet our daily demand. However, Kunle noted that the Dangote refinery is not a silver bullet for Nigeria's energy challenges. "We still need to address the issues with our existing refineries, which are not functioning at optimal levels," he said. "We also need to invest in new infrastructure, such as pipelines and storage facilities, to support our energy sector."

The Nigerian government on Thursday said it has commenced both diplomatic and legal steps to recover the three presidential aircraft seized in France on account of indebtedness.
The diplomatic and legal means are being currently explored by the Office of the National Security Adviser, NSA, and the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice.
A statement by the AGF on Thursday in Abuja maintained that the debt which led to the seizure of the presidential aircraft was incurred by the Ogun State Government in a contractual agreement with a Chinese company.
Parts of the statement read: “On 14th August 2024, the Federal Government of Nigeria became aware of the interim attachment of three presidential aircrafts undergoing routine maintenance in France.
“The said temporary attachment was made pursuant to ex-parte orders issued by the Judicial Court of Paris dated 7 March 2024 and 12 August 2024 respectively

The CBN sold $876.26 million at N1,495/$1 to 26 qualified banks in the auction. A total bid of $1.18 billion was received from 32 dealer banks, but bids from six banks were disqualified. Fitch Downgrades Union Bank of Nigeria to 'Junk' Status"

Fitch Ratings has downgraded Union Bank of Nigeria PLC's Long-Term Issuer Default Ratings (IDR) to 'CCC' from 'B-', citing a prolonged breach of the bank's total capital adequacy ratio (CAR) requirement of 10% and uncertainties regarding the timeline for restoring compliance.

The downgrade reflects concerns about the bank's viability and ability to meet its regulatory capital requirements. Fitch estimates that Union Bank of Nigeria has breached its CAR requirement due to a significant increase in its regulatory risk reserve, which is deducted from capital for the purpose of capital adequacy computations.

The bank's near-term prospects will depend on continued sound internal capital generation and a timely execution of the recapitalization plan agreed upon by new management with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Fitch noted that progress is being made in reconstituting the board and the bank continues to operate as a going-concern

Sentiment Report For this week; NGXASI Sees Mixed Sentiment

The NGXASI saw a mixed sentiment this week, with 43% of stocks recording buy sentiments and 57% recording sell sentiments. The volume index stood at 1.39, while the MFI (Money Flow Index) was at 78.52D.
In a surprising turn of events, Academy topped the gainers' chart with a 100% buy sentiment, followed closely by Accorp with a 53% buy sentiment. Cutix and CWG also saw significant buy sentiments, with 70% each. Fidelity rounded out the top gainers with a 100% buy sentiment.
On the other hand, Cileasing saw a mere 8% buy sentiment, making it the biggest loser of the week. CHH and Daar also saw significant sell sentiments, with 15% and 33% respectively. Jagold and UPDC rounded out the bottom five with 25% and 10% buy sentiments respectively.
In other news, Zenith Bank announced a N290bn fresh capital raise through a public offer and right issue on July 29, 2024. This move is expected to boost the bank's capital base and support its growth plans.
However, not all banks fared well this week. Sterling Bank and Stanbic IBTC Holdings faced significant challenges as their share prices plummeted.

The naira surged to N1,570/$1 on the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM) window on Thursday, marking an increase of 2.47% from the previous day's rate of N1,608.73/$1. This is the highest one-day increase since July 22, 2024, when the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) decided to resume selling foreign exchange (FX) to authorized dealers.

The local currency has closed below the N1,600 ceiling, which it crossed about a week ago. However, it is gradually recovering from the significant loss recorded last week, snapping a six-day losing streak on Wednesday when it appreciated by 0.77%.

Despite the gain, FX turnover appears to be unstable. While it rose by 62.81% on Wednesday to $270.81 million, it crashed on Thursday, August 1, 2024. Nigeria's FX turnover fell by 47.45% to $142.32 million, likely suggesting either low trading activity or a low supply of dollars on the official market.

The CBN has been trying to boost liquidity in the FX market by selling foreign exchange to authorized dealers. Last week, it sold a cumulative amount of $148 million to 29 authorized dealers. The foreign exchange was sold at exchange rates ranging between N1,470.00/$1 and N1,510.00/$1.

The naira's gain is a positive development for the Nigerian economy, which has been facing challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other factors. However, the unstable FX turnover suggests that there may still be challenges ahead.

The Nigerian naira plummeted to a four-month low of N1,611 against the US dollar on Monday, July 29, 2024, according to official data from the FMDQ. This marks a 7% depreciation in July, the worst monthly drop since February.

The naira's decline reversed last week's gains, despite the Central Bank of Nigeria's (CBN) efforts to stabilize the exchange rate by selling forex to traders. Market turnover recorded $179.34 million, with total turnover for July reaching $3.7 billion.

Analysts attribute the depreciation to increased demand pressure from importers and autonomous sources, including retail and investor demand. The CBN has attempted to boost liquidity in the FX market by selling $148 million to forex traders, but the naira continues to struggle.

The exchange rate has now depreciated by 77.6% this year, with Nigeria's external reserves remaining around $36.5 billion as of July 26, 2024. The federal government plans to issue $500 million in domestic foreign currency-denominated bonds in the coming weeks.
