Sonja Harmse of Muvhimi Buffalo Safaris aptly captures this sentiment with a quote by an award-winning journalist, author and Britain’s foremost writer on African wildlife safaris: “Everything in Africa bites, but the safari bug is worst of all.” In her article “Hunting to create a lasting impact” she stresses how important it is for hunting outfitters to take responsibility for their industry and carefully consider their actions as caretakers of the environment. Speaking of nostalgia, nothing stirs up emotion in the heart of a true hunter like the tradition of hunting. After many hours of practice and endless patience, Johan Smit of HunTech Pro took his young son, Jordan, on his first hunt and sums it up perfectly: “Watching him on that first hunt, I saw not just my son but the future of our family’s hunting legacy.” Parents have a huge responsibility to teach their children the values of ethical hunting and Johan is the perfect example thereof. We bring you a good selection of hunting articles. Leopard hunting is not for the faint-hearted, even more so when using a bow. Adventure bowhunter Tom Miranda pursued this cunning cat and, after more than two months, was rewarded with a beautiful tom leopard. Bowhunters will benefit from Cleve Cheney’s article on the four most challenging bowhunting shots.
Willem Vermeulen’s lifelong dream of hunting an elephant was realised when he had the opportunity to cull a rogue bull that destroyed the crops and houses of local villagers. He describes it as an overwhelming experience and gave the meat to the local community, thereby contributing to sustainable utilisation. Nico Kotzé regales us with happy memories of a childhood hunt with his family in Zimbabwe, and Johan Smit of HunTech Pro shares a memorable hunt with US friends in the Northern Cape, during which his wife, Beulah, shot a magnificent sable bull.

Johan Smit of HunTech Pro shares the team’s unusual hunt for feral goats and sheep in the Northern Cape. Laurence Jennings travelled all the way to the Eastern Cape, where he chased rutting fallow deer in the magical Stormberg mountains and bagged a beautiful stag. Also make sure to read Levi Hill’s “When sables attack” – a close encounter during which he wounded a sable and nearly ended up on the wrong side of those razor-sharp horns! Another tough customer all hunters have immense respect for is the buffalo. Nico Kotzé and his PH took some great risks tracking down a wounded old dagha boy in the dense thorn thickets of Limpopo – and lived to tell the tale. Local hunters do not always realise how fortunate they are to hunt in the African wilderness. For many overseas hunters, this remains but a dream. Thanks to a kind-hearted local hunting outfitter, American hunter Derome West was able to realise this lifelong dream. Read all about it in “African sunsets”. Wick Burger, who shares his adventurous hippo hunt on the Zambezi River, sums this up really well: “As the sun was setting over the Zambezi River and that magic sunset glow appeared, I couldn’t help thinking about my family and how lucky we are to be able to call ourselves children of Africa!”

Women are pulling their weight in so many spheres of modern-day society, both at home and in a professional capacity. And when it comes to hunting, many share this passion with the men. Andrea Potgieter of Pink Impala, a qualified PH, loves hunting so much that she made it her career, while Jo-Anne van Niekerk started her own business, Forever Africa Taxidermy. And there are many other ladies like them.
Some women prefer joining their family on a hunt – a special time spent together while creating precious memories. And what father would not be proud of his daughter becoming a budding huntress? Lumari Jennings, daughter of regular contributor Laurence Jennings, tells us about a challenging blesbuck hunt in “The one that almost got away…”. Laurence believes it is every hunter’s duty to protect and promote the sport of hunting. He did just that by taking Andriette Killian on her first-ever hunt. Not sure whether she would like hunting, she now cannot wait for the next time! Women who love hunting enjoy doing it together. Every year, pinkHunt organises a hunt during which a group of ladies harvest wholesome venison for their families and forge new friendships through their shared passion for hunting. This year was no exception. Elke de Witt shares this special hunt with readers in “pinkHunt in die Bo-Karoo”. Hunting has many wonderful facets. Cleve Cheney tells us about the magic of the campfire – a place to enjoy simple things that are often taken for granted. 

 In “Our furry hunting friends”, Nico Kotzé brings tribute to all the loyal and brave hunting dogs he has had in his life – the best hunting companions one could wish for. He lives by the motto, “God gave us dogs to give us a glimpse of what unconditional love looks like.” Sonja Harmse of Muvhimi Buffalo Safaris shares this sentiment in her article about Todd Luttman and Anneline Pienaar of South Africa Tactical Training (previously K9 Tracking). They specialise in the tactical training of protection and working dogs and their dedication and professionalism are admirable.
Cleve Cheney uses hunting and photography to get close to nature. “I can get as much satisfaction from ‘hunting’ with a camera than with a firearm and, in some respects, even more. Every time I photograph some facet of nature or wildlife, I have a ‘trophy’ to treasure and add to my collection.”
Whether hunting with a rifle, bow or with the camera, it remains a privilege to immerse yourself in nature and all its wonders – something you should share with and pass on to future generations. 

In “Valuable old things”, Cleve Cheney reminisces about the early days when handloaders did not have the sophisticated ballistic programs available today but had to try and figure things out for themselves. One such valuable item from the olden days is his cherished Powley computer for handloaders, a simple slide-rule contraption made of cardboard, which is just as useable today as when it was invented in 1961. It is ideal to take on a hunting trip, and you can sit by the light of a paraffin lamp (no electricity) and do whatever ballistic calculations take your fancy. 

All hunters will agree that hunting a buffalo is the ultimate dream. They will also agree that this formidable opponent is not called Africa’s Black Death for no reason. This animal means business when wounded or simply in a bad mood. In “When a buffalo bellows”, Sonja Harmse of Muvhimi Buffalo Safaris shares a challenging hunt by a client who had to brave the Bushveld heat and dense bush to outsmart inaythi. We receive great articles every month, but every now and again we get that special one that tugs at the heartstrings. “How to make a dad cry…” tells how Mark van der Linde goes out of his way to make it possible for his son, Connor, who suffers from a debilitating physical condition, to realise his dream of hunting. This brave boy has the heart of a real hunter indeed – an example to all hunters out there.  Laurence Jennings travelled all the way to the Stormberg mountains in the Eastern Cape where he harvested a magnificent blue eland bull with a neck the size of an oil drum – a once-in-a-lifetime trophy hunted in a very special place with very special people. Read all about it in “Eland hunting – the sleeping giants of the Stormberg mountains”. If the eland is on your hunting list, make sure to read Prof J du P Bothma’s insightful article on the species. Two other great hunting stories not to be missed are “The real Midlands Meander – a reedbuck odyssey” by Michael Vigne and adventure bowhunter Tom Miranda’s “Old-world deer”.

Hunters are a breed apart. They love the smell of gun oil and the wet earth after the rain, the calmness and clarity brought about by being alone in the bush, and, of course, a good challenge and the thrill of the chase.  Another trait they share is courage, even when the odds are stacked against them, like facing down a buffalo charge, knowing there can only be one victor. Levi Hill and his father, Buddy, went on a buffalo hunt with an unexpected outcome – and lived to tell the tale. But it is not only the men who show their mettle. Huntresses are every bit as brave, no matter their age. At only 14 years old, Andrea Eggers realised her dream of hunting her first buffalo bull after winning the Rhino Bullets and Lowveld Hunters hunting competition. Tamlyn van Wyk challenged Africa’s Black Death on its own turf, using her own reloaded bullets for the first time to bring down a trophy bull – no mean feat since she only had two weeks to learn how to reload. 

For American hunter Michael Arnold, it was “love at first sight” when he saw a photo of the vaal rhebok for the first time. This was the very first African animal he wished to hunt, causing his astonished PH to call him his “strangest client”. Adventure Bowhunter Tom Miranda faced a monumental challenge by hunting an elephant with a bow and arrow in Zimbabwe, describing it as “the ultimate bowhunting challenge”. “Stepping into bow range of a wild African bull elephant brings on a reality that cannot be found in stories or photos.” And from the big to the small… For LD Jennings, it is the common impala that causes the adrenaline to surge through his veins. He has a passion for hunting this dainty antelope, especially during the rutting season. If the impala is on your hunting list, Prof J du P Bothma’s insightful article is a must-read.

Levi Hill braved Africa’s Black Death and hunted his first buffalo bull – a nerve-racking experience as the hunting party was charged by a buffalo herd and lived to tell the tale. And if you don’t need to save your bacon with a serious calibre but must hunt food to survive, what firearm would be best? The humble air rifle, of course. Cleve Cheney explains why in “Firearms for survival” . Moving from the bush to the fishing waters... LD Jennings loves carp fishing on the Vaal River. Sharing this passion with his family and teaching his kids to fish and appreciate nature is what it is all about for him . Many a hunter dreams about hunting a buffalo one day. For anglers, the equivalent to this probably is doing battle with a billfish on the big blue. For Stefan Fouché, it was indeed a dream come true when he won an epic fight with a magnificent black marlin of 250-300 lbs off the coast of Vilanculos, Mozambique. That same day, he watched the Bokke win the fourth Rugby World Cup. In his own words, “that really qualifies for the trip-of-a-lifetime award!”.

It is the time of year when many hunters have already successfully tracked down their quarry and have the trophy on the wall and the biltong in the pantry – and we have their stories to share with you.
The Kalahari has a way of luring back hunters to its endless sea of dunes and the creatures that live there. Seasoned bowhunter Tom Miranda fell under its spell and braved the harsh landscape to hunt a special quarry – the golden oryx. Read all about it in “Stalking the wilds of the Kalahari” (p 30). Also make sure to read Prof J du P Bothma’s informative article on the remarkable oryx on p 68. Another avid bowhunter, Johan Smit, got US-based TriplePoint Outdoors on board for Season 4 of HunTech Pro and tells us about their visit to South Africa to test their ClovisTM mechanical broadhead.
They hunted the Free State, successfully taking a roan antelope, Ankole-Watusi bull, kudu and buffalo (p 50). Heinz Grobler realised a lifelong dream by hunting an old dagga boy with his Rigby rifle (p 10), while LD Jennings travelled all the way to Utah, USA, to hunt a Rocky Mountain bull elk – an unforgettable experience (p 34).

Women hunters are caring and compassionate. For the third consecutive year, Damesjag donated the venison from their hunt to HelpJag, providing healthy protein to needy families . PinkHunt also organises an annual hunt during which a group of ladies harvest wholesome meat for their families and forge new friendships through their shared passion for hunting. Bowhunters will enjoy Tom Miranda’s article on the magic of hunting from a tree-stand in Africa, which puts the bush in a whole new perspective (“Silent safari”). For Bryan Betton, it was a dream come true when he hunted his first elephant in Zimbabwe. While out on that special hunt, guided by a PH to whom we entrust our lives, we do not always realise what it takes to become a PH. Johan Smit of HunTech Pro decided to find out by enrolling for the PH course with Sutherland Hunting Academy – and passed with flying colours. Well done, Johan!
In the market for a new riflescope? We bring you a feature on ZEISS’s first-focal-plain scopes for long-range precision shooting and hunting. Christophe Roelofse also reviews the D42HV56WFIMA tactical scope from March Scopes, hand-built by Japanese craftsmen. Hunting outfitters and game farm and lodge owners will benefit from Fiona Kruger’s valuable advice on how to effectively market their enterprise locally and abroad in a very competitive field. They should also make sure to read Cleve Cheney’s article “Alternative energy for game farms, lodges and hunting camps” on how to cope with our country’s electricity crisis. 

In “A close shave with death” (p 60), Namibian-based PH Steve Tors shares the story of a leopard hunt that almost ended in tragedy. However, it is not just claws, fangs and horns that pose a danger in the hunting field but also the smaller critters. Cleve Cheney explains in “A sting in the tail” (p 44) that a sting from a venomous scorpion may not only be extremely painful but also fatal. He gives valuable advice on how to avoid them and what to do if you are stung. On the auction front, Dr Flippie Cloete reports that activity in the live game-trade segment continues to be robust, with prices remaining at higher levels thanks to the strong demand from the hunting industry (p 74). Brandon van Zyl explains the importance of introducing new genetics on your game farm to ensure top-quality animals for the auction pens and the hunting field (p 76).

As always, we bring you a selection of fine hunting stories. According to American bowhunter Tom Miranda, Africa has become the most popular international bowhunting destination. “Of all the animals a bowhunter can pursue in Africa, the bushbuck is the
most like a white-tail,” Tom says. He hunted one near Cape Town and shares his adventure in “The bushbuck – Africa’s white-tail” (p 22). To balance the scale, local bowhunter Johan Smit of HunTech Pro realised a life-long dream when he was invited to bowhunt
white-tailed deer in America. Make sure to read “Velvet buck in Kentucky, USA.

Every very now and then, life sends something your way that forces you to sit up and
take notice. For me, that “something” was Jim Rice’s article, “Fulfilling dreams in
the Free State” on p 24 of this issue. Thanks to an old friend’s valuable advice, Jim
realised his dream and started hunting in Africa after putting it off for many years. In Jim’s
own words: “What my friend meant was, if hunting is your passion and hunting a particular
animal or in a particular part of the world is a lifelong dream, you can make that dream a
reality. It’s better to pursue your dream, no matter the cost, than to give up on it, only to regret
it later when you are physically unable to do it … Many times, we have only a window
of opportunity to achieve our dream. If we miss that window, the dream is gone forever.”
Truer words were never spoken!
Brandon van Zyl also shares valuable advice with all role players in the wildlife industry
in his article “The importance of knowledge in wildlife management” (p 80): “Those involved
in the wildlife sector need to be open-minded. Every day gives us a new opportunity
to learn and adapt. Therefore, knowledge is the key to success. We must just be willing to
grasp it every time we get a chance.”

In this issue, we focus on rhinos and their conservation at a time when poaching
is threatening their survival. A heartwarming story unfolds in Carola Oelofse’s article
“Mount Etjo Rhino Orphanage – every little life matters” (p 10). She tells the story of
Annette Oelofse, a remarkable woman who has been raising orphaned black and
white rhinos at her rhino orphanage in Namibia for the past 30 years. In our species
feature, regular contributor Prof J du P Bothma provides detailed information on the
southern white rhino (p 72). Darrel Sterling ended up on the wrong side of an enraged
2 000 lbs rhino bull on a green hunt – and lived to tell the tale! He shares this close
encounter with us in “Rhino charge!” (p 54). Coenie Meyer got the opportunity to
hunt a problem rhino bull, something he regards as a great privilege and a humbling
experience (p 32).

As we focus on the African rainforests this month, we could not resist the temptation to publish an article about a very cool custom gun – the CZ Rainforest. The brainchild of our own hunting editor, Stefan Fouché, the CZ was developed during long hours around campfires, sipping good whisky, and in Ruark’s Trading Post, the in-store deli of our local Safari Outdoor gun shop that serves some of the best coffee in Pretoria. The rest of the CZ team consist of Hancke Hudson, who has almost a quarter of a century’s hunting experience all over Africa, especially the dense Cameroon rainforests, and Jaco van Vuuren, master gun builder and co-owner of Morkel & Crouse Riflemakers. Stefan describes the CZ Rainforest as “a reliable, straightforward working rifle … the ultimate setup for hunting dangerous game in the densest, most extreme conditions, and that with the utmost confidence”. Well done, CZ team!
Hancke shares his rainforest hunting adventures with us in “Hunting the forest dwarf buffalo” and “Hunting the bongo”. He also guided American client Cynthie Fisher on a tough bongo hunt in Cameroon. On this hunt, she also took a blue duiker, a Peter’s duiker, a forest sitatunga and a red river hog. Read all about it in “Challenges in Cameroon” .
Over the past 27 years, André Roux has regularly hunted eland in many different parts of Africa. He says the best eland hunting he has ever done undoubtedly was in the Central African Republic, describing it as “eland hunting in its purest form”. In “Hunting eland” , he gives valuable advice on hunting these big antelope, saying their behaviour is pretty much the same everywhere. 

Nico Kotzé must be holding the record for one of the longest hunting trips ever. While capturing game in the Limpopo Valley, a 21-day national Covid lockdown was announced. But things turned out differently and 21 days slowly became 46. It was a life-changing ex- perience as he was all alone and could not only hunt and fish but also do some serious introspection. Read all about it in “Hunting the Limpopo Valley – 46 days in isolation” (bl 10).

We are kicking off the year with a few great hunting articles for those suffering from withdrawal symptoms, as the next hunting season is still a few months away. Our hunting editor, Stefan Fouché, braved Africa’s Black Death and took a magnificent old buffalo bull in the Caprivi in Namibia – a humbling experience that will remain with him for the rest of his life. Read all about it in “Another dagga boy in the Caprivi” . . .”  For Wynand Jacobs, it was a dream come true when he won the 777 Hunting Competition, the largest of its kind ever in South Africa. Wynand’s prize included a seven-day hunt for seven trophy animals at Schoongezicht Hunting Safaris – a buffalo, sable antelope, roan antelope, kudu, eland, waterbuck and a golden gnu. Nico Kotzé went after fallow deer in the picturesque Wittkoppe mountains of the Free State, while LD Jennings explains why wingshooting over dogs can be just as exhilarating and rewarding as going after the dangerous stuff . If you are getting a bit “long in the tooth”, don’t despair; there is still hope. PH Andrea Potgieter guided an 80-year-old client from Denmark on a successful hunt, and he hopes to return for a buffalo!

Although auction apps and telephone bidding are the norm these days, this auction will always stand out as a community-orientated event known for its top genetics and high prices. This year was no exception. People not only reached deep into their pockets to acquire top genetics but also to help those in need. R70 400 was raised for the Summit Wildlife charities and R35 000 for HelpJag. Well done to all those involved! Read the full story. As of late, there has been great controversy regarding the fundamental question, “Can you use a Section 16 firearm for self-defence?” Christophe Roelofse tackles this complex issue head-on. WILD & JAG/ GAME & HUNT is an independent monthly publication for the broad game industry in South Africa, promoting the synergy between game production, hunting and conservation. Hunters, game ranchers and nature conservationists are served with quality informative articles and columns. GAME & HUNT is a magazine that promotes a lifestyle to the kind of reader who does not remain just a reader but becomes a follower of the GAME & HUNT brand. 

While WILD & JAG/ GAME & HUNT operates in close cooperation with organised hunters, game production and nature-conservation organisations, it is editorially and financially independent.
In every edition is to be found a lead article on an important aspect of the wildlife industry as well as an article on a specific animal - including small game, big game and carnivores. Also a nature article (scientific cum popular) on South Africa's plant life and/or geographical features.
