Applied Force
SUP International|Issue 25 - Mid Summer 2019

Whether you’re paddling into a relentless headwind, sprinting to catch a race leader, frantically digging for a set wave, or even towing clients back to base, there’s the same dominant factor working against you: the force that pushes back against your blade as you paddle through the water.

Applied Force

It is inescapable Newtonian physics: if your paddle exerts force on the water, the water will exert an equivalent force on your paddle. Paddle gently, the water pushes back gently. Paddle hard, the water pushes back hard. Unlike lifting a weight, whereby the mass of the object says how difficult the task will be, it is our paddling intensity that makes a session difficult. Difficult is not a nice thing for most of us, so why then over time, is the general trend for a paddler to get faster and to put more intensity into their sessions? Well you could say that without effort we won’t get into that headwind, or encourage the release of endorphins, but it’s not always windy, and there are more likely stimulators of the brain’s pleasure centres, i.e. riding waves!

Bliue Thunder - Backside turns.
