Providing green canopy along the highways and creating jobs for the youth.

In five years, motorists on large parts of India’s extensive national highways can hope to have a green canopy to protect them against heat, dust and glare as the National Green Highway Mission (NGHM) of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways takes root.

The Mission got underway on July 1, 2016, with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari kick-starting the initial plantation drive along 1,500 kms of national highways with a budget of about Rs.300 crores.

In 2015, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Government of India, realized the immediate need and importance of developing green corridor along the national highways. Therefore, in September 2015, the MoRTH promulgated the Green Highways (Plantations, Transplantations, Beautification and Maintenance) Policy 2015 to develop green belts along National Highways for sustainable environment and inclusive growth.

The task of planning, implementation and monitoring roadside plantations along one lakh kms network has been entrusted to the National Green Highways Mission under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Besides providing a green canopy and a safeguard against rising pollution, the NGHM aims to create jobs for 1 million youth and generate alternate income source for local communities.

“The NGHM will do everything possible to involve communities and state governments for tree plantations to make up for the tree losses while road building. We also want to make the entire endeavor socially and economically sustainable. The NHAI is in this for a long haul,” stresses Raghav Chandra, Chairman of the NHAI.
