“I WENT to Kimberley to work for two brothers who had a business in construction. I was referred to them by my aunt who is related to their father, although I knew no one in Kimberley but them. 

I found work as a foreman, overseeing the transport of their various employees – I made sure they were fetched from their various destinations, taken to and from work. They also gave me a bakkie, which had seen better days, to run the errands for them.
