Many times when parents realise that their child has told a lie, they would reprimand the child and tell them that it is wrong. Consequently, the parents may feel that their child has turned into a monster, wondering how their child can lie without batting an eyelid.
What many parents don’t realise is that lying happens for a variety of reasons. Here are the reasons why children lie, and what you can do about it.
1 OUT OF GUILT / FEAR
More often than not, children act to evoke positive responses from their parents. Yet, they also know the consequences if they do something “wrong”. Therefore, if they know they’ve made a mistake, fear and disappointment in themselves can cause them to try to rectify the situation, sometimes with alarming results due to their inability to problem-solve effectively.
