Our experts tell you how to look beyond the gimmicks and smart advertising, and find a bank that really works for you.
When it comes to choosing a bank, only a few of us read the fine print before we plunk down our money. For instance, when Rashika Sachdeva, 22, design manager, opened a bank account, she had no clue about what she should look for. While smart marketing gimmicks pushed her towards the private banks, her parents nudged her towards the nationalised ones they had been patronising for decades. “Frankly, I had no clue what set one bank apart from the other. So I went to the private bank in the neighbourhood because it seemed the friendliest,” she says. “Since I was so financially clueless, I signed wherever they wanted me to and before long, I was the proud owner of a brand new account with a snazzy ATM card. It was only after the first quarter was over that I realised that the bank expected me to maintain a hefty minimum balance in my account. I had to close the account soon after because it was next to impossible for me to do so with my meagre salary and many expenses.”
To make sure that you have no such issues, we’ve done the homework for you and created a checklist of the things you need to think about when choosing where to park your hard-earned money.
