Bentley’s forthcoming Bentayga hybrid adds a new dimension to the luxury SUV market. Motoring editor Andy Russell looks at the marque’s most efficient model ever
The Bentley Bentayga is, according to Bentley, ‘the world’s first luxury hybrid’. While Land Rover has also introduced plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology to its Range Rover, it represents Bentley’s first step towards full electrification, combining silent motoring, exquisite comfort and effortless performance.
Making its public debut at the Geneva International Motor Show in March, the new PHEV of the world’s most luxurious SUV will be its most efficient model ever with CO2 emissions of 75g/ km. With an electric range of 31 miles, a full charge from a domestic household socket will take seven and a half hours while an industrial connection takes the charge time down to two and a half.
At the heart of the Bentayga hybrid are two power sources – a highly-efficient electric motor and a new 3-litre V6 turbo petrol engine. The E Motor acts as both an electric motor and a generator for a seamless driving experience and the maximum electric range.
