- IAN MACEWAN, ALISON SLADE

Tales From the riverbank

You might not expect viewers to get hooked on a TV series in which two men in their 60s go fishing. But Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing, in which old friends Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse do exactly that, has proved to be a surprise hit.

Whitehouse Am I going to have to concede that there’s a higher power, Bob? I’ve been holding out my whole life…

The Bride!

Stitching together scraps and gobbets of other works, actor-turned-writer-director Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Bride! is a gloriously unhinged monster mash of a movie: Bride of Frankenstein meets Bonnie and Clyde meets Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, with a chunk of #MeToo feminist rage thrown in, too.
