Born with her heart outside her chest, Virsaviya has defied medical odds.
SHE’S a pretty eight-year old with blonde waist length hair who loves to dance and draw. But one thing sets her apart from the pack: her heart.
Instead of nestling snugly behind her ribcage, Virsaviya Borun’s heart is on the outside of her body, beating away in the middle of her chest.
Far from being self-conscious about her condition, the little girl is rather proud of it. “This is my heart,” she declares. “I’m the only one who has this.”
Virsaviya suffers from thoraco- abdominal syndrome, or Pentalogy of Cantrell as it’s also known in the medical world – a condition that causes defects in the diaphragm, abdominal wall, pericardium, heart and lower sternum.
In Virsaviya’s case, her heart is protected only by a layer of skin. She’s also missing chest bones and part of her diaphragm and abdominal muscles.
