Neha Joshi celebrates the diversity of the ‘Indian Sari’, the glamour associated, the though this column…
Ages have gone by and several others are about to come and in the end go, but the charm and appeal of this 9 yard unstitched cloth has never dawned. The Indian Sari has never gone out of trend and sight.
The diversity of sari is unfathomable. It is seen glamorising the wearer, seen as a comfort dress for several and representing sanctity for others. As a fashion quotient it has been carried by many and unnumbered celebrities both Indian and foreign. Some are just the persistent fans of the garment, making this cloth as their style mantra and symbolic of their personality.
The Sari, precisely a “strip of cloth”, is considered to be the oldest piece of unstitched cloth which had been discovered to be the dress of both men and women back in the era of Indus valley civilization. While this style of draping the cloth has been prevalent in India since 3000 B.C, other civilizations such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, Sumer and others have also indicated this form of wrapping of cloth. Also mentioned in our Vedas, the sari which has been a female garment is also seen as a comfortable ‘dhoti’ for men, till now.
