During the frequent wet spells that we have enjoyed this summer, I’ve been unable to get outside jobs done, and unfortunately the inside work was dealt with ages ago. So I did something I haven’t done for years, I watched some fishing programmes.
I was a bit apprehensive, because quite a few are celebrity led, and others are presented by carp anglers from a totally different generation from my own, speaking lingo that I don’t understand. I asked myself a couple of questions before tuning in. Would I end up bored? Would I be cringing and hiding behind the sofa?
I needn’t have worried, as I enjoyed everything that I watched, even the programmes that are tailored to getting non-anglers interested in the sport, which can only be a good thing. After all, rod licence sales have declined, indicating that participation in angling is declining, too.
I’ve always been a bit of a cynic. Jeremy Wade’s programmes are based on local folklore or legend, which makes for entertainment, as I’m sure man-eating fish attract far more interest than 5 in. bleak. Even the great David Attenborough used a bit of sensationalism in the programme that featured him searching for a ‘monster lizard’, a Komodo dragon. Being a dull sort of chap, I’m not so interested in mysteries. I want to know the facts straight away.

Making Short Work Of Specimen Chub
It takes angling guide Kenny Parsons a few hours to drive from his home, near Bath, to his favourite Wessex rivers, but it doesn’t seem to bother him, as he just loves to catch big chub on feeder and fl oat tactics, his personal best standing at 7 lb 12 oz. One of his favourite methods for this cunning species is a maggot feeder with a short hook link.
