The previous weekend, my wife, Margaret, and I had been out detecting with our friend Stu and three of our young grandsons (Hayden 10, Reuben 8 and Tristen 5) – the highlight for them being a trip round the field in the farmer’s combine harvester! Now our daughter and her husband were coming up to take them all back home. My daughter, Ellie, had requested that we spend a few hours detecting before going to the Kettlewell Scarecrow Festival.
We arranged to meet up with Stu at a site that had previously yielded some Civil War period coins and so were looking forward to hopefully having an interesting day. However, Stu rang in the morning saying the field was too wet, so we should all meet at another, drier field – this was one we had been on before but hadn’t found much. It was, however, a good spot for small boys to run around.

Lost and Found?
There have been several instances over my long detecting career where, not only has it has been a delight to be able to help people who have lost things, but also a great thrill when such losses are returned to their owners. I have several memories of such occurrences.
